Six Organizations Named Hunger Heroes for 2010

With varied organizational goals from technology education to childhood fitness—the local institutions that support hunger relief are likewise sensitive to the basic needs of the community in which they live and work. Familiar names, like Target and 3M, and emerging brands—such as tortilla manufacturer, Catallia—took note as hunger escalated, actually doubling in Minnesota since 2005. Many stalwart partnerships were established, creating a model for fast-forward, compassionate action when the economic bottom dropped out for many of our neighbors more recently. Dean Foods redoubled its effort and commitment; the Minnesota Vikings brought the full might of its Children's Fund to the cause; Cub Foods pushed thousands of pounds of groceries out the door, bound for local food shelves. The inaugural Hunger Hero awards honor the mission-sharing scale of these six organizational partnerships on the issue of hunger relief in our community. These are six unique stories of achievement and hope that illustrate the Second Harvest Heartland credo—ending hunger through community partnerships in unprecedented ways, and with outsized impact.
